Return to the Mother a Tribute to Nina Hagen

Track 6 --- Antiworld

Wood Records released released this tribute cd to Nina Hagen, the proceeds for which goes to Amnesty International.  Ancient Pistol provided a cover of "Antiworld".

The lyrics surprisingly fit into the Ancient Pistol themes of science, nuclear physics and fun.  It is also the debut of lyrics on an Ancient Pistol release.

The USS Indianapolis was a ship that was sunk under mysterious circumstances during WWII, which is called the worst disaster in US Navy history by some. A large number of the crew were lost due to shark attacks. The captain was court marshalled for losing his ship, but was later exonerated in the 1940s. News of the exoneration was not released to the public in 1998.

Its cargo was delivered to the island of Tinian, which was later loaded onto the Enola Gay.

So the USS Indianapolis was the first craft on the sea to carry a man-made nuclear device, hence the soundscape.

The movie that scared me as a young'n was War of the Worlds, as imaged by George Pal. Mr. Pal was known for a type of stop-gap animation, called Pal Toons, which used interchangeable carved bodied and faces of puppets. Still the best version of H.G. Well's story, George Pal is responsible for many childhood memories.

Recorded in the following locations: Hidden Fortress Studios in Brighton, MA. Mixing occurred at Hidden Fortress Studios April-June 2009; on the Acela Train enroute to Washington, DC March 2009 at 150 MPH; and the Embassy Hilton in Washington, DC March 2009.

Thanks to Sharon Lee, Jake Tobin, Cory Holmes and Lisa Herbert, my gang at work who have had to listen to me kvetch about this recording and Roger Miller, whose guidance is partially responsible for the ongoing recording career of AP. So blame him. And MySpace.

Review:

Metronome Magazine (January 2010): Musician Michael Feeney is the mastermind behind Ancient Pistol.  His talent at guitar is exceeded only by his technical prowess with gadgets, machines and recorders.  On his Flying Wing v. the Martians offering, Feeney manipulates sounds, invents eerie loops and cajoles his guitar to create an otherworldly vibe that would be perfectly suited for a modern day Sci-Fi soundtrack.  Folks who bend their personalities with mind altering substances would also get a huge charge out of listening to Feeney’s work on a great set of headphones…heck I do not use mind altering drugs and I enjoyed it immensely through my headset.  Cool listening stuff for the nuclear crowd.
